ON SCREENWRITING

Well, the toolbox stuff came to a halt because of the focus on Norma & Margie and the screenwriting. That said, two books that have helped me out alot recently are King's book on writing and Linda Seger's book Making a good script great. Also, here are links to a few helpful screenwriting sites.

Archetypes

Archetypes

I had a hard time with this entry, not because of the source material, but in terms of where to analyze. The concept of Archetypes is easy enough to follow in Jung and Campbell…and I live in LA, so I know all about the Hero’s Journey.

But in terms of looking at the archetypes in my own work, I wasn’t making much progress. I thought about characters like Thea but it was hard to look at them in an archetypal sense, because I spent so much time making those characters real and distinct to me. But I made a connection through Campbell’s work. A Myth is a symbolic representation of an event of initiation in one’s life. Based on that principal, I should be able to examine people who were involved in these sorts of events in my life and find archetypal value in them.

The person in my past that came to mind was a former love from college the year that I lived in the dorms and started forming some of my working theories. She had the ability to pick up parts of you and absorb them into her own personality – body language, speech patters, the whole nine yards. Needless to say, when you’re confronted with yourself like that, it has an effect. For me, it helped me decide to refine my direction. If my life had been a myth, she would be an archetype that affects supernatural aid, in particular a shapeshifter.

This conclusion resulted in the module relationship below, which may be useful in developing more effective characters.

Forbidden Planet

Recently I purchased the soundtrack to the scifi movie Forbidden Planet for research in sound design....I used to write music, and most of the stuff I'm happiest with from that period was more based in sound design than pop. Future experiments in music will probably be more like sound design or musique concrete.

Anyway, the liner notes in the Forbidden Planet soundtrack talk about Louis and Bebe Barron and the comparison between circuitry and life forms.

Wikipedia notes:

"The 1948 book Cybernetics: Or, Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine, by mathematician Norbert Wiener from MIT played an important role in the development of the Barrons' composition. The science of cybernetics proposes that certain natural laws of behavior apply to both animals and more complex electronic machines."

Cybernetics might be worth looking into.....At some point I'll post a schematic on how I think the subjects in my previous posts might work together.

As I wrote earlier, I'm interested in how focused intent/ritual can possibly affect Synethesia in the arts, maybe as a two-way relationship or circuit.

I'm also interested in Dreamwork, but not sure how that could factor in.

Synethesia seems to be a trait that can't be instigated under normal circumstances.

Maybe an act of focused intent can influence the onset of Synesthesia, or at least help discern how these elements or nodes work together.

I've started experimeting with Electronics and CircuitBending as a comparative study...maybe it will help me put together a schematic of sorts for my current research.

Currently I'm Breadboarding a 6v "Voltage Controlled Oscillator" (VCO) project.

I'm somewhat stuck on how to ground the breadboard and the "Voltage Control In", but this stuff is alot of fun.

The basic oscillator reminds me of OCD, in that it's basically a feedback circuit; the same wave feeds back over & over through the circuit.

Steve D. from the Ultraculture-LA group had some interesting points about what I'm considering at the moment

The first of which involved a citing from Einstein's Meaning of Relativity

"By the aid of language, different individuals can, to a certain
extent, compare their experiences. There, it turns out, that certain
sense perceptions of different individuals correpsond to each other,
while for other sense perceptions no such correspondence can be
established. We are accustomed to regard as real those sense
perceptions which are common to different individuals, and which
therefore are , in a measure, impersonal. The natural sciences, and
in particular, the most fundamental of them, physics, deal with such
sense pereceptions.... The only justification for our concepts and
system of concepts is that they serve to represent the complex of our
experiences. Beyond this, they have no legitamacy."

...two things come to mind when reading this:

- Internal/External: How much of my thinking about Art & Synethesia is based on internal observation vs "Comparing notes" with others?
- Objective/Subjective:What do I consider "Reality" and what don't I?
